Verbindungsoffizier - liaison; liaison officer

hope this helps."

pdf is available from http://insomnia.quelrod.net/docs/enigma_round_1.pdf

Ok, some quick results:

Result 1:
effenyodendetersixssfruenrdursersumnenxannuenioiiningrneunebeuenkuleplnu

  • ende = "end", as in the end. Spelling is OK.
  • frue = could be inkorrekt spelling of früh, "early", prob. bogus
  • an = "at", prob. too short, bogus
  • in = "in", prob. too short, bogus
  • neun = "nine". Spelling is OK.

Guess: ende, frue?,neun - "end early nine"

Result 2:
bvqclunnervenkmaetwes sechtehen tiser heffenulbrurcfneingekrschlvgfgaulxnfs

  • nerven = "nerves". Spelling is OK.
  • etwes = misspelling of etwas, "something"
  • sechtehen = seriously misspelled, stehen would be "standing"
  • tiser = no idea, prob. bogus
  • heffen = could be misspelling of hoffen, "hoping", prob. bogus
  • nein = "no". Spelling is OK.
  • gaul = not so nice name for a "horse", or horse not for riding. Spelling OK.
  • gau = area/district, used in NS time. Spelling is also ok.

Guess: "nerven neun gau/l" "nerves nine horse/distritic".

Result 3:
shsnquleistehroaryxbeiefueneiffenseaiqkjrnenulmgkebeininefuermschtzeluhy

  • leiste = "band" or "bar" or "serving" Spelling is OK.
  • bei = "at" prob. too short?
  • ulm = "Ulm", city in southern germany. Spelling is OK.
  • fuer = "for". Spelling is Ok.

Guess: "leiste bei ulm fuer". "Leiste" does not refer to "band" as "band of the frontline or units". So it could be "serving" as "doing duty".

Result 4:
zjleusuerste durchsprupereeelassensdichtssteruer mussidvlf bengruchenhxfltl

  • leusuerste = sounds like a word when you speak it, but prob. is not.
  • durch = "through", spelling is ok.
  • lassen = "let", spelling is ok.
  • dicht = either "very close" or "proof" as in "water proof"
  • steruer = serious misspelling of steuer, "taxes" or "steering wheel". Prob. bogus.
  • muss = "must". Spelling is ok.
  • bengruchen = A name? Else no idea, prob. not a word.

Guess: nothing really.

Result 16:
estugercda destantetxvomoungnjkoteadscheineneunvondxtentkeinssstrisjhchtc

  • da = "there", prob. too short.
  • des = form of "the", like "keeper of the hause", prob. too short
  • tante = "aunt", spelling is ok.
  • schein = either "shine" or "bill", probably the latter (?). Spelling is ok.
  • scheinen = "shining", spelling is ok.
  • keins = "none", spelling is ok.

Guess: tante scheinen keins. "aunt shines none". Doesn't really make sense.

Result 17:
aedotonurtrerhoffuergxlewiinetersfuendeneorerttieaoccnsyeiehlaenachsyekf

  • fuer = "for", spelling is ok
  • wiineters = shares letters with winter, but is seriously misspelled
  • fuende = "findings" would be "funde", so it is misspelled
  • nach = "after", spelling is ok

There's only two words there which I can identify, doesn't look like much.

Also, most are rather short words, so this might not really help. VO could indeed be an abbreviation of "Verbindungsoffizier".

I've started and most of it looks like gibberish with the
occasional word or *possible word* thrown in.

Pretty much. I'll check if there is a longer word, which might not be coincidence.

Hi all

I'm new to this, but you seem to have an interesting project here.

I think that was #34, not #17. There are a few more german words in there [ton (sound), nur (only), hof (farm), ende (end), den (the)], but I doubt this is the answer we are looking for. Likewise for #16. Can someone put the complete set of hceyz72 results on rapidshare or similar? Searching thousands of pages manually is a huge chore, but I have an idea how to automate the process.

About the suggestion that German spelling reform might make it more difficult to decipher the message - I doubt that will be the case. The recent reforms mainly affect the use of sz (double s), triple consonants (eg, Balletttänzerin), silent h (eg, Thun -> Tun), and spelling of loan words, as well as capitalisation (eg, Du -> du), hyphenation (eg, Zuk-ker -> Zuc-ker), splitting of compound words (eg, Rad fahren), and punctuation. Many changes are irrelevant in the context of Enigma messages, and the others are unlikely to affect comprehension.

A couple of words at random locations are not enough, it's a side effect of the algorithm used. These words just popped up at random and the score went up.
There's always a slim chance, that the hillclimb algorithm will decode a fragment of the message and the rest will be just a random garbage. For such decrypt, the score might not be high enough to show up in top scores.

There's a real example of message like this on cryptocellar.org:

http://cryptocellar.web.cern.ch/cryptocellar/bgac/GArmy_July1941.html
http://cryptocellar.web.cern.ch/cryptocellar/bgac/Ekeys_July1941.html

3) Nr. 153, SOFGI, gets garbled after the third cipher group.
No fiddling seems to decode the following cipher groups.

Even though most of the machine settings are known, it's still impossible to decode full text. And as far as I know, the application used will find the partial solution, but it's score is below top 'random plaintexts' (that also depends on the dictionaries used).

I can dump the whole archive to txt (CSV) file (and probably also .XML/.XLS), just tell me which format you need and I'll upload it somewhere.

CSV would be fine for what I have in mind.
I suggest posting it on rapidshare or a similar service.

Nope, the 'live' database (used by the server) is not available for public, because it's really big and querying it seriously reduces the server performance.

I thought a static page with awgly100 top50 or top100 results.
Maybe we can look over this top results and check if there's anything that makes sense.
It's not worth to update this page up to the end

Yes, how about a static page with top N results or perhaps one that is updated weekly.
