Hi, I have another bug to report, once the admin gets back: If you install Enigma@home for the first time, using Linux as an example, only the following files are downloaded:

I think that is consequence of server thinking memory requirement beeing massive and your computer not meeting it. So it doesn't offer binaries at all. |

Wasn't it suggested that the admin might be on a 5-week vacation, and the failure started on or near March 25 2017, 5 weeks from which would end on April 29? -Dan Q danq.co |

I think that is consequence of server thinking memory requirement beeing massive and your computer not meeting it. So it doesn't offer binaries at all. Hi there, The message the server is generating is: Enigma@Home: Notice from server Enigma 0.76b needs 3633355906759967822163392472118519509897936333762380538799349237146650150447872889552536326477638749902077901780791787612123406287017170888293484786718292115578013593460801536.00 MB RAM but only 22116.19 MB is available for use. Which is not only more than 32 gigs of RAM... it is more than all the RAM that has ever existed in the known universe. :-) Hence, when it checks to see if your machine has the required amount... not so much. Puzzled me too at first. |

Where did you read that? There is speculation that he is on vacation though but never heard any confirmation of that. I really think TJM needs to open the reins to someone else if he isn't going to be around all that often. Even if he is on vacation, he isn't checking email either. Even his hosting provider cannot get ahold of him. |

What about Jaro? He comes here at least once a month to give the estimated time remaining. I'd imagine all you'd have to do is check something once or twice a month and deal with problems if they happen. -Dan Q danq.co |

TJM needs to do something. If he wants to see this project completed especially this year, the project cannot suffer long outages. Contributors can leave and never comeback. |

TJM needs to do something. If he wants to see this project completed especially this year, the project cannot suffer long outages. Contributors can leave and never comeback. Even more important, TJM needs to update the page to say we are on the fifth, not the third, message. His updates refuse to mention anything other than "Site problems fixed" or "New message cracked" and people leave all the time out of suspicion or confusion because they don't know we solved the third message in 2013 and are working on a fifth message. -Dan Q danq.co |

Thought I'd mention, I discovered that if you (re)attached Enigma@home during the downtime period, per the bug report here, you will need to remove and re-attach again to get the complete group of files, otherwise no Enigma tasks will download to that client. -Dan Q danq.co |

I've tried to find more information about this, and haven't had any luck. I've found a message from 259 days ago (from you, danq) suggesting that the front page needs to be updated; it was obviously ignored. I found a post from TJM that links to a PDF that "describes exactly what the server does now." His link doesn't work for me, but I found one that does. I post it here to save other people some of the leg work that I've had to go through. This doesn't relate to bugs, but it's inline with the thread. If anyone wants to move it to a more appropriate forum, by all means do so. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/220615718_Breaking_German_Army_Ciphers According to that file, there are hundreds of uncracked Enigma messages remaining from the war. Some 258 of these are from April 1945, and "seem to come from the communication centre of Flossenburg concentration camp." That makes the effort to crack these messages more than a mere academic exercise; it has much more historical importance. Will these be addressed by enigma@home, or are we only working on naval communications? Seriously, someone ought to make a dedicated page on this site that explains exactly what we're doing and why. People that want to contribute to this work shouldn't have to go to so much effort to learn what's going on. I've been busting my tail trying to piece it all together, and I'm still confused. Edit: On further reading of the PDF file, I've learned that all of the April 1945 transmissions have in fact been decoded, although earlier messages remain unbroken. |
