Hello world,

I know it´s off topic, but because this is the most read thread, I post here:

Did anybody but me recognize that Microsoft installed the former optional "Diagnostic and Telemetry service" on ALL Windows 7-machines with the latest "Quality"-Rollup?

Greetings

Why are you asking the same question across multiple BOINC forums? This would be better asked on a computer forum somewhere.

Why not? Are BOINC-users not afraid about their privacy too?

"Afraid" HELL NO!!! Aware of what's going on ABSOLUTELY!!!!

I too think this if off topic for a "Number Crunching" thread of any Boinc Project though!!

It wasn't the latest roll-up that did it alone, you must've had a couple of updates already installed for it to work, not in the least KB3032345, the first of the ones that included the D&T service. This update was later updated by Microsoft.

It's very easily stopped, just go to the services applet (search for services.msc in Windows search), find Diagnostic Tracking Service and stop, then disable it.

Then no matter how many updates you get in, it won't restart.
It also helps to batten down the hatches some more with checking that certain CEIP entries in Task Scheduler are stopped:

Start->type Task Scheduler in search and hit Enter.
When Task scheduler has opened, click Task Scheduler Library->Microsoft->Windows->Application Experience, set all options here to disabled.
Now look for Customer Experience Improvement Program and make sure everything here is disabled.

For all the rest of the options, read Manually disabling Telemetry through settings (Windows 7, 8, and 8.1) at http://superuser.com/questions/972501/how-to-stop-microsoft-from-gathering-telemetry-data-from-windows-7-8-and-8-1/

That post includes a list of addresses you can block in your router. But the safest thing of course is not to use Windows at all. Perhaps even not the internet.

Thank you for your reply and the very informative link!
For example I didn´t know before that it is possible to UNINSTALL a service, I thought you only can DISABLE it.

Regarding the update-topic I wrote the following email to the EFF because even they didn´t believe me what Microsoft did:

Hello A.,

I never installed the otional KB3068708 (replaced KB3022345), KB3068708, KB3075249 and KB3080149 updates and updated my PC the latest months with the "Winfuture Update Packs" (which are available here: http://winfuture.de/UpdatePack#download), because they only contained the pure security patches until October 2016. But because of problems with the "November 2016 Security Only Quality Update for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1" (https://support.microsoft.com/de-de/kb/3197867), for example the "Windows Update Client" itself was broken, they provided the WHOLE PACKAGE for the first time in November 2016; I didn´t know that before :(

After that I found the in https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3192403 described folder in my registry (it wasn´t there before) and the aktive "Diagnostic Tracking Service", which I immediately inaktivated and built the "disable-key" mentioned above.
Then I uninstalled KB3197868 - the service was away.
After reinstalling KB3197868, the "Diagnostic Tracking Service" appeared again AND WAS AKTIVE although the "disable-key" was still present! Because of the name of the key (DisableEnterpriseAuthProxy) I think it might only affect PCs in an enterprise-network.

I therefore think, KB3197868 was the way the "Diagnostic Tracking Service" found its place on my PC (and maybe hundreds of millions others around the world)!

BTW I tried to download the Security Only Quality Update by myself (only possible with the Internet Explorer after installation of an addon) but I didn´t succeed.
Is this forbidden for "normal" citizens now ?
Is this a method ?

Yours sincerely

MSpy has been adding Telemetry patches to Win7/10 for along time. This isn't new.
