Hey everyone! I live Enigma@Home, so naturally, I was wondering when the project would accomplish it's goal and crack the codes.

What will happen after the 3 original messages are cracked? Are there more, or is that it? And finally, does every contributing volunteer get credit at the end if E@H's amazing journey?

Hi Chris,

There must be loads of unbroken messages, but finding them may be hard though as they're probably buried in archives somewhere. I think going after Army messages would be interesting, though how many records were kept is another matter.

On a more generic note, nice to see enigmaathome being registered back again after a short (but worrying) gap!

I was also breifly worried there - went to check my stats, but the page wasnt there - an hour or two later and it was back to normal, though *phew*

The three original messages from 2006 were cracked a long time ago. The first two were cracked relatively quickly while the third one wasn't cracked until 2013. A bunch more unsolved messages were later discovered, and we are right now on the last of that batch.

To be honest, I don't see this project going much longer. While TJM has historically not been able to devote much time to this project, it's been an unusually long time since we've last heard anything from him. It's only a matter of time before the server encounters an error that requires human intervention. The very nature of the message (possible incomplete or poorly transcribed input) and the algorithm makes it possible that no result could be reached. Also, unless there are other Enigma messages to work on (there are only a finite number of those) there's not much long-term viability anyway.

Although I've put in a fair amount of time on this project and still regularly check the forums, my computing priorities have shifted and I've taken most of my hosts off this project some time ago. It is still attached to my old PowerPC hosts since there are only a hand-full of projects that support them anymore, but in the past year I have been travelling a LOT for work and have not even powered any of them on in a long time.

I think it'll be a shame when this project ends - it's good project, with relatively easy credits - i only have 2 cores 24/7 and 4 cores on 3 - 12 hours a day, but the WUs are short, so I can knock home a few a day even on my old 2 core phone.

I'm still really interested in the history of the Kriegsmarine, so I hope the project continues. I've resorted to a few android devices now I don't have access to infinite free power. I occaisionally work at a fairly large maritime archive, so I'll keep a lookout for messages like Enigma.

I actually get the marvelous opportunity to visit Bletchley Park, twice a week, my son is in the Royal Air Force Cadets, based at Bletchly, next to the old mansion, and just to the rear of Turins Hut. It might be possible to ask if there are batches of historical unbroken codes, but i will have to investigate who to approach.
