Can you tell me why the first 2 messages was break fast and that the third message is in calculation since more than 2 years. is there a specific reason. thanks |

Mostly because of the sheer amount of possibilities which letter in the message is which letter in the original sentence. Although a couple of thousand possibilities less than 403291461126605635584000000, that number does give an indication of possibilities for each letter in the original message. Each message being 250 characters at maximum in length (a lot are shorter) doesn't make it easier. Best to read up on the Enigma machine to get an idea of the machine used. And I'm sure that TJM will come explain it in bigger detail when he finds the time. Jord. BOINC FAQ Service. |

but what i want to know is the difference between the first 2 messages and the third one. the two first code have been crack in a few month in 2006. but we work on the last one since 2 year. i understand that it as multiples combinations to work before we break the message for all messages but why the first two was crack fast and not the last one. thanks again |

That's because some messages are relatively easy to break while others are tough, a lot depends on the ciphertext and machine settings. A single missing letter (or too many garbled letters) somewhere inside the ciphertext can cause a lot of problems. We won't know why it's taking so long until we break it.
