Message 353 - Posted: 13 Dec 2007, 19:32:44 UTC

I'm running Mac OS X v10.5.1 and I can't run Enigma@Home.
My BOINC client says it's running but nothing happens.

How can this be fixed?

The CPU and progress counting did not work with a application which would started via the BOINC wrapper.
Do you see an enigma process running in the activity monitor (avilable via applications / utillities /application monitor) and using CPU time ? - If yes, everything would this be OK.

Ferreira, I notice that you've been returning results... just wondering on the average time the units are taking on your Mac? I'm being a curious Nelly as the time taken doesn't show up in your results :)

Calm Chaos... are you feeling it yet?

See this post

The no progress/no CPU time error is known, and will hopefully be fixed soon. They take between 0:45 and 1:30 on my Mini G4 1.42 w/1 GB RAM for awgly100 units. hceyz72 run 1:15-2:00. This is just an estimate, and could be horribly wrong, as I'm estimating based on BOINC's ETC before the units start. I don't think the times vary a whole lot.

That's because the wrapper which is used to run Mac app was build from old sources, I believe that many bugs were fixed since then. I compiled Linux and Windows wrappers some time ago from updated sources, both now have progress report built-in. Unfortunately I don't have a Mac, so I have to find someone who will build the wrapper. First, I'd like to see if the latest revision of the default BOINC wrapper will be compatible with Enigma on Mac, then I'll eventually add the progress report patches.

I will try to build the new wrapper for MacOS, if I have some more time. I hope this or next week.

That would be nice, I think that the new wrapper code will fix a lot of Mac-specific bugs, like the 0 CPU time reported to the server and occasional ERR_RESULT_START problems.

I hope too. ;) Has you found some spare time for the wrapper?

I've compiled the binaries for PPC and Intel and send them to TJM.

I think I'll update the Mac apps sometime this week, first I have to fix some severe server side issues.

Upgraded wrapper is online for over a week now, is it better than the last one ? Did it fix the '0 CPU time' issue ?

With the current results, on two different Macs:

OS X 10.4.11 PPC: Percentage progress working, no CPU time, no "to completion"

OS X 10.5.6 Intel: Percentage progress and "to completion" working, no CPU time.

Well, then I guess I have to upgrade the wrapper code to the latest SVN and try again - current version for Mac uses the same source as the Win/Linux apps.

could be the BOINC client version:
I just upgraded from 6.2.18 to the newly released 6.6.20 on my PPC Mac mini with OS X 10.4.11 and get normal readings with CPU time (now called "Elapsed"), Progress counter and "To completion" time.

WU is not completed yet, but time will tell, if CPU time and claimed credit show up.

get normal readings with CPU time (now called "Elapsed")

Correction, Elapsed is not CPU time, but Wall-clock time. To see CPU time, select the task in the tasks tab and click Properties.

The Elapsed time is showing for CUDA people, so they don't think their tasks only take a minute of CPU time, when they don't.

(I have a BOINC Manager that shows both the CPU time and Wall time columns. For how to get it, see this FAQ, various compression formats are available in the "In BOINC Manager it shows that the CPU time for a CUDA task is mere seconds, but the task runs for hours. Why is this?" section. It's for Windows and Linux only. Still looking for someone who wants to build it on the Mac.)

Ah thanks for this hint, didnt spotted this button yet.
In the detailed informations there are no value for CPU time an CPU time at last checkpoint listet.

Something different:
does Enigma work with OS X 10.3.9 or on a G3? on my iMac G3-350 MHz every WU errors immediatly after start:
<message>
process got signal 5
</message>
<stderr_txt>

wrapper_5.23_powerpc-apple-darwin undefined reference to _statvfs expected to be defined in /usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib

wondering why I'm getting a message back from the server saying

"Message from server: Enigma 0.76b_("is not available") Mac OS 10.4 or later running on Intel."

Been running fine for sometime now. Why the exception message?
